Most sessions will focus on self-awareness, choice, problem-solving, and setting goals for the present and future. They do not have to be a part of the therapy session. If you are not a dog person, have allergies, or are not comfortable with them, it is not a problem. I want to be a safe place for them.Īt times there may be therapy dogs in the office. There may also be aspects of guilt, shame, or embarrassment that hinder them from sharing what has been burdening them. I have observed that many people feel alone or may not feel safe sharing some of the most sensitive parts of themselves. I am very casual in my presentation as I have found that being authentic and relatable allows people to be comfortable with me. I try to keep the environment friendly, warm, and safe. I feel that the most important aspect of therapy is therapeutic rapport. A significant part of my training and experience comes from working for the National Council on Alcohol and Drug Dependence NJ, where the consultation and training were provided by David Mee-Lee, a leading expert in co-occurring substance use and mental disorders. I have worked in a variety of settings including outpatient, group home/halfway house, IOP, PHP, and residential. I have worked in the mental health and substance abuse field since 1996.
